Name: Ash Fleetfoot
Gender: Male
Age: 15
Species: Hare
Occupation: Cadet/trainee
Physical Appearance:
Ash is the average for his age and species. Being a young hare, his frame is more wiry than bulky, but he retains some of his baby fat. Youth has insured his appearance intimidates exactly no one. His fur is a blotchy mix of light tan and light grey coloring. His father used to joke that when he was a baby, he fell in a fireplace and that no one has been able to get him clean since. The feature that stands out most though is his blue-green eyes, which look like the sea on a summer day.
Being a young long patrol cadet, Ash dresses in a cadet’s uniform most of the time. His father and brothers encourage him to do so even during his off hours, as they stress the importance of his training. Part of that uniform is a black armband he wears in memory of his mother.
Possessions:
Ash has a white tunic and brown britches for when he’s allowed to dress as a civilian. Being relatively new to the force, his weapons mostly are the training variety and he has yet to be given a real blade or javelin to wield. There are the odd bits and ends he keeps in his bunk, but nothing he values more or less than anything else.
Personality:
Ash is a quiet, intense young hare. Raised in a military family, and the youngest of five sons, he feels enormous pressure to join the Long Patrol and climb through the ranks. His father Wendell was initially a jokester, as were his brothers. After the death of his mother Cordelia though, they all became more serious and less liable to joke around. This was also around the time that they started to pressure Ash about his training.
Ash was given very little time to mourn his mother, and the sudden change in family dynamics has left him feeling a bit isolated and lost. There is a hidden but deep undercurrent of anger in this hare that he doesn’t know quite what to do with. Initially he tried to train it off, but that doesn’t seem to help. He’s also worried that his teachers sense this anger and are likely to declare him unfit to join the Long Patrol because of it, which would be a devastating blow to him and his family.
A stubborn youngster, Ash has a tendency to play himself up. If he disagrees with someone, he will argue his point of view even when they outrank him. There’s also his terrible tendency to speak without thinking that gets him to trouble nearly daily. He also acts like he’s more sure of himself than he is, hoping that if he fakes it long enough it will become true. However, it usually ends up with him embarrassing himself, usual just as one his brothers or his father is turning the corner.
Strengths:
Ash is a dedicated young hare, and loyal to a fault. While he’s not the most social of hares, he will stand by a friend’s side in a fight. There’s also an abiding sense of morality to Ash, and he believes in doing the right thing no matter what. This is a hare that will stand up to anyone to defend his convictions.
Weaknesses:
Despite his bravado, Ash is a deeply insecure young hare. He doesn’t feel he’s at the same level as the other trainees and fears he’s falling behind. There’s a part of him that believes he is a disappointment to his father and brothers. There is also the previously mentioned undercurrent of anger, which occasionally manifests into snipping and verbal fights. Deep down, Ash suspects his anger problems are getting worse and that there is eventually going to be an actual fight because of his attitude.
History:
Ash is the youngest son of a family of two parents and five boys. His mother had been hoping for a daughter, but when Ash appeared she shrugged and decided that a girl was just not meant to be. Both his father and mother were members of the Long Patrol. Fierce fighters, they told stories of their adventures as well as the exploits of their forbearers. They encouraged their sons to prepare to join the Long Patrol when the time came. An expectation that each of Ash’s brothers have met. From a young age Ash would tussle with his brothers, as the older boys liked to pick on their baby brother. Jokes and pranks were common, though Cordelia knew how to rein in every member of her rambunctious family. For the most part, life was good.
When Ash was eleven, his mother went on patrol with her squad and never came back. She was killed in an ambush by sea rats. While the raiders were successfully put down, Cordelia died of her wounds before ever making it back to the mountain. Her family was devastated. Wendell became colder and withdrew from friends and family, focusing all his attention on patrolling and defending the coast. He told his sons that the defense of the mountain was paramount: They had to prevent future tragedies like this from occurring.
With their father essentially gone, the eldest brothers took to raising the youngest members of the clan. However, soon only Ash was alone was not staying at the barracks. So Wendell had his youngest moved to the cadet’s dormitories at a younger age than was generally expected. Afterwards Ash rarely saw his family members unless it was during training or brief flashes in the mess hall. Taking his father’s instructions to heart, he has dedicated himself to training and scolding anyone who isn’t as serious about it as he is.
Relationships:
Ash has four older brothers named Irving, Stiles, Marvin and Whitten who are all members of the long patrol. His father Wendell is alive, but his mother Cordelia is deceased. Ash's post-mourning attitude has alienated many of his previous friends. Currently he is as alone as he feels.
