Name: Priya Yewbrush Gender: Female Age: 20 Species: Squirrel Occupation: Redwall Recorder
Physical Appearance:
Priya has neat, short, coppery fur that lies flat and thick, giving it a permanently just-groomed look. Her long brush of a tail has more hues of red and gold than the rest of her and also has a way of seeming like she has just taken careful care to make it look presentable. The only sign of messiness that ever seems to befall her are the ink-stained paws she commonly has after writing. She is an average height and size for a grown squirrel, with perhaps a little softness around the hips that can be attributed to a love of sweets.
The squirrelmaid often dresses in the conservative fashion of the Brothers and Sisters of Redwall, although she isn't one herself. She has a weakness for shininess though, and her arms are often covered in bright bangles and chains. Similar jewelry hangs around her neck and, when dressed more casually, even about her ankles. One could tell whatever flowers were currently blooming in the gardens by the flower she usually has tucked behind an ear.
Possessions:
-Usually a quill and ink and at least a piece of parchment to scribble notes on. Less often a large bound book to write in. -Feather collection that invariably turns into a quill collection.
Personality:
Priya is a creature made of softness. Soft demeanor, soft voice, soft laugh, soft fur. If someone had to describe Priya in a word it would probably be "kind." She is the type of creature that is always pleasant to have around, but easy to forget. It's not uncommon for her to go unnoticed even in small settings. Despite that, it never really seems to bother her. She's mostly content in her own company, but when she isn't, it's simple enough for her to find company.
An orphan herself, she has a particular attachment to the parentless Dibbuns of the Abbey. If she finds herself with idle hands, she collects young ones and organizes games, reads to them, and nurtures their blossoming personalities. Other times, she volunteers herself in the kitchen, assisting with everything from cooking for the main meals of the day, to cleaning dishes after. She learned at a young age that this was an easy way to get her paws on sweets that may not otherwise be accessible.
Although forgettable herself, she has an uncanny ability to not just remember every creature in Redwall, but also very specific details about each of them. It isn't something she does mindfully or for any purpose. It comes to her through her own quietness and attentiveness. Many things she hears and learns end up in her own writing. She happily shares any passages she may have written, sometimes unaware it may come off as odd that she writes about they other Abbeydwellers.
Above all, the young squirrel identifies herself in her passion for writing. A skill she discovered in her teens, she spends a lot of time nurturing it. Priya doesn't always have the words on her tongue, but she always has the words on paper.
Strengths:
-Writing: A skill she has refined in her position as Recorder. -Agility: She has the natural affinity to agility and climbing that comes to her species. Though not otherwise athletically inclined, she can shimmy up a tree faster than most. -Cooking: Particularly baking. Priya's love of sweets have encouraged her to experiment in the kitchen.
Weaknesses:
-Fighting: Of any kind, physical or verbal. She possesses no fighting skills and is too soft-spoken and shy to hold up in a verbal altercation. -Gullibility: Being raised by the Brothers and Sisters of Redwall Abbey, Priya never really learned to cope with or recognize lying and deception.
History:
Priya was orphaned before she had any memory of a family; Redwall is all she's ever known. She is told she was found in Mossflower alone as an infant and brought to the Abbey to be cared for. That she was an orphan without family seemed true enough, but her being found alone seems to be in some dispute in retellings, and the older she gets, the more she assumes there is a piece they aren't telling her for her own benefit. She doesn't let it bother her much.
It was hard to ask for a better childhood than to be raised in Redwall Abbey. She grew up with a hodgepodge of other orphaned creatures, who, as far as she was concerned, were all her siblings. As they grew, most of them became more curious about their parents, or extended family, or original home and some of them had become footloose enough to leave when they got older. Priya never felt so inclined. Why would anyone leave?
While she never felt any inclination to leave or question her past, she did find in her teens the need to throw her earnest nature into something more. Brother Clive, an older mouse who'd played a large role in her upbringing, tried to interest her in art. And Priya did find interest in it. Just not as much interest as creating a story for the picture once she'd completed it. Less effort went into each drawing as more flowed into her writing. Eventually she was tying together scrap pieces of parchment to try and make her own small books.
One day, Brother Clive approached her and and handed her a thick, hard-bound tome, faded by time and worn with love. Recognizing it as one of the books the old Recorders used to chronicle the history of the great abbey, she laughed it off and declined the gift. But it wasn't so much a gift as a job offer. She could be Redwall's new Recorder. The abbey had been so peaceful, so quiet, so absent of turmoil, the act of recording its seasons had fallen by the wayside. There hadn't been a passage made in Priya's whole life. With some trepidation, she took on the task.
Priya has since warmed into the position, making sure to make at least a passage for each passing season. She also taken on a side project, binding her own book for smaller passages of her own daily observances. She still has no desire to leave the redstone walls.
