Name: Kay Morivan
Gender:Female
Age: 11
Species: Mouse
Occupation: Orphan, being raised at Abbey
Physical Appearance:
Kay is a young mouse, but it is quite clear she is going to be a beauty when she grows up. Her fur is silver, though it is darker around her nose and hands, with a nice healthy sheen to it. Her eyes are wide and dark brown to the point of appearing black. She is of average size for her species and age, though she will tell anyone who asks… or doesn’t ask that she is going to be very tall one day, because her mother and father were tall.
Kay favors bright colors, and after much wheedling managed to have a purple dress made for herself. She likes to pair it with a red scarf. When asked about it, her caretakers will say the colors make it easier to keep track of her.
Possessions:
Kay has a number of possessions which she keeps hidden away from prying eyes. There is a locket she inherited from her mother which she wears constantly under her dress. Under her bed she keeps a broken rattle that once belonged to her baby brother, as well as her elder sister’s favorite scarf. Under her pillow there is her father’s favorite book, which she can’t quite read yet. Of her elder brother, she has a small dagger he gifted her before disappearing into the night that is always on her person. From the Abbey she has received a doll which she takes everywhere and often talks to.
Personality:
At first, residents of the Abbey thought that Kay was a quiet, withdrawn child. Having been recovered under traumatic circumstances, Key refused to talk to anyone and often hid away. Then, after a few months in the loving care of the monks, she came out of her shell and revealed her true nature. Kay is a mischievous young girl, energetic and loud. She loves to dance and make proclamations. Naturally inquisitive, she will spend all day asking random people questions about how things work, why they work that way, and if someone will teach her to use whatever it is she is asking about. A restless student, it is hard to get Kay to stay focused in class. It is also hard to keep her attention focused on chores, and she is known to wander off halfway through a task. All in all, Kay’s guardians have their hands full dealing with this little troublemaker.
Strengths:
Kay has proven herself to be:
- Resilient in the face of tragedy. Having witnessed a truly traumatic scene, Kay has recovered well all things considered.
- Is agile and fast, and shows great dexterity. Has great promise as a dancer.
Weaknesses:
Kays weaknesses include:
- The shortest attention span known to anyone. As mentioned previously, it is hard to keep her on task.
- Suffers from nightmares, and bouts of insomnia. This has led her to explore areas of the Abbey late at night, looking for a hiding place. This has also led to her scaring her caretakers badly when she’s not in bed in the following morning.
History:
The first nine years of Kay’s life were good. Her family were travelers, her mother a dancer and her father a merchant. Part of an ever expanding clan, Kay was well loved by both parents and siblings. Her elder brother was protective of her, while Kay and sister Liana often teased each other. Kay was known for stealing Liana’s clothes, especially a favored blue scarf. It often didn’t work out though, as Liana was older and taller than Kay.
The family traveled through Mossflower and the surrounding areas, never truly settling down in any one place. Ambrose and Marianna had rambling hearts and their children inherited similar traits. Unfortunately, this family was doomed to tragedy. One night, after they made camp, they were set upon by thieves in the night. Brutus grabbed his sister and ran into the woods. Liana was not as quick with Ambrose. In the dark wood, Brutus hid his sister amongst some bushes, handed her a small knife, and told her to stab any hand that reached in to grab her. With this whispered advice, he turned tail and vanished into the night.
Kay passed a cold dark night in the woods, waiting for something to happen. Eventually the sun rose and feeling brave, she crept out of her hiding spot and made her way back to camp. There she found the bodies of her family, slain in their attempts to either fight back or flee. With no idea of what to do, Kay stayed near the wreckage of her once happy life.
It was a small group of mice who found her. They buried her family, helped her to pick over the possessions she wanted, and then took her to the Abbey. They called her Kay because the only thing she had said was “’Kay” upon being given directions. After arriving at the Abbey, she stayed silent for a few months before regaining some of her former cheer. However she has yet to tell anyone her real name.
