Name: Bardineta Glister Gender: Female Age: 54 Species: Field mouse Occupation: Abbess of Redwall
Physical Appearance:
Bardineta has sharp, almond shaped hazel eyes which are constantly roving around, taking in every detail. Her fur is naturally quite coarse but always immaculately groomed, and she has long fine whiskers which quiver subtly for much of the time. She has a slender build, despite her eating habits, and is quite tall for a mouse, giving her a more imposing air. Usually, Bard wears a brown robe which blends largely with her fur, although she sometimes wears green or red variations of the same.
Possessions:
Bardenita tends to travel extremely lightly, never having more than one or two items with her at a time, but the items which she carries vary. Most of the time, she has a quill and a journal with her to record any thoughts, ideas or inspirations which might strike her as she goes about her daily business. Since this happens fairly often, she works through journals at an impressively fast rate; however, they are usually all of the same type, being small, thick and backed in black. Bardenita possesses a number of different quills, which she usually stores on her desk. She also owns a delicate necklace of shells which are always in her pocket though never worn; an heirloom from her mother. One possession which she never mentions to anyone and rarely even thinks of herself is an old dagger which she has kept well concealed in her rooms ever since she first came to the Abbey- the last thing that her father ever gave her.
Personality:
Bardineta is a suspicious and highly cautious mouse, although these traits have become far less pronounced since she came to the Abbey. They are very definitely still present, however; she never takes anything at face value and has to scrutinise every detail before something new is accepted. Trust is something which other have to work hard to earn from her, and she has always been the kind to form snap judgements of people- although this trait too is less obvious now than it was when she first arrived. Bard is always kind and courteous to people on the surface, but underneath her mind will be working hard to try and figure out exactly what makes them tick. The mouse is of the kind who has to know absolutely everything before she will be satisfied, and though she might well decide that she likes someone at a moment's glance, it would take her many seasons to decide that she trusted them.
However, she does not discriminate when it comes to those in need, and she is always prepared to help anyone who needs it, whatever her personal opinion of them. Her advice is freely given and well thought out, and her quirky sense of humour and ever-present sarcasm help to make her a popular companion amongst those who know her. Her trust, once earned, is not easily lost, and it is certainly a valuable commodity, coming hand in hand with loyalty and comradeship.
Strengths:
-Negotiation -Decisiveness -Attention to detail -Excellent memory -High intelligence
Weaknesses:
-Impatience -Likes her food a little too much -Finds it difficult to trust others -Easily distracted by unimportant matters
History:
Bardineta was born to Liliana and Brospo, two mice who earned a living as small scale merchants selling necessities such as clothing, twine, hay and so on. They travelled huge distances as a matter of course in the way of business, buying where things were cheapest and selling where prices were highest. Because of this, Bardineta grew up on the road, and her education would have been sketchy at best if it were left up to her parents. Luckily for her, however, the two travelled with an old vole, who had been an academic at one time but had fallen in his fortunes to the point where the only way in which he could earn a living was to help Liliana and Brospo to navigate around the country. He refused to allow her to live in illiteracy, and so he gave her the rudiments of learning; simple mathematics which allowed her to help her parents in their business, the ability to read and write and, above all, a love of knowledge which motivated her to go on educating herself after the vole sadly passed away by the side of the road after a prolonged illness. By the time that her parents died suddenly in a shock attack by a group of bandits who the two had managed to elude on earlier journeys, Bardineta had a good working knowledge of most subjects and a particular love of history.
Aged twenty, she found herself suddenly alone in the world and with no clue where to go or what to do next. The bandits had taken everything that her parents had, both their goods and their money, and Bard had neither the knowledge nor the means to go about earning a living for herself. She confessed her plight to an old hedgehog who helped to heal her wounds in a nearby village following the attack, and he told her to go to the place where he had learned his skill at healing: Redwall Abbey.
The journey was long and arduous, and it took her over two years to finally reach the gates of the Abbey. Starving, cold, wet, living on what she she could scrounge and growing rapidly more and more sick as time went on, it had not been one of the greatest experiences of her life. Things could only get better, and indeed they did. She received food, shelter, a warm bed and was soon cured of her illness. With no profession or talent which she could rely on for funds to provide for herself, it was utterly impractical for Bard to venture out into the wider world, and so she took a place in the Abbey. She soon proved herself to be capable and efficient, as well as being likeable and almost scarily good with people, and so she rose rapidly through the hierarchy, spending some time as librarian- a post which she thoroughly enjoyed since it allowed her to exercise her love of learning, books and reading to its fullest- before finally being asked to fulfil the position of Abbess on the death of the previous incumbent at the age of forty nine, only after two other candidates had refused. She has, however, proved herself fully capable of carrying out the office, and so far at least, no one has any serious complaint to make.
Relationships:
Bardineta's mother, Liliana, and father, Brospo, both perished in an attack by a group of bandits led by a stoat who considered that they had wronged him. She has few true friends, scared and unwilling to get too close to anyone, but she likes and trusts most of the staff and residents at Redwall, to a greater or lesser degree.
