Name: Rausaro
Riverpaw
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Species: River Otter
Occupation: Scout/Ottercrew
Physical Appearance:
A scout in the High Rhulain’s forces, Rausaro is lean and athletic. His pelt is a common two tone brown and cream. His hands and wrists bear a number of scars from fishing and brawling with vermin on occasion, but nothing extraordinary. On his shoulder, the otter bears a tattoo of three blue zigzags with a gold sunburst on his left shoulder; the blue stripes represent the Riverpaw clan, and the sunburst loyalty to the High Rhulain.
In terms of clothing, Rausaro typically wears a green grey tunic with a black eelskin belt, though when he adventures he utilizes slightly heavier gear, including a sharkskin vest with a mixture of lightweight metal plates and leather designed to dampen or deflect light blows without limiting mobility. He also utilizes a travelling pack, a hooded cloak matching his tunic, and a walking staff.
Possessions:
Other than his clothing and traveling supplies, Rausaro uses a somewhat rare but otherwise simple weapon in the form of twin Katars. A type of punch dagger, Katars are essentially two wooden wrist guards, a handgrip, and a knuckle guard with fixed triangular dagger blade extending from it. This allows him to attack foes with swift slashing and puncturing attacks. However, the style of fighting is only of limited use against properly armed or armored foes.
The otter also keeps a small silver medallion around his neck that he tucks inside his tunic. This medallion is a symbol of service to the Rhulain, and he guards it with his life.
Personality:
A friendly and loyal creature, Rausaro is nevertheless fairly introverted, preferring small groups and individuals to the large gatherings that happen at Redwall. Whether feast or gathering, he can usually be found at the edge of crowds.
As part of his training, the otter does his best to maintain relatively disciplined behavior, including frequent exercise and scouting trips. As a very active creature, he can be easily bored of staying in a single location, and indeed he frequents the woods of Mossflower in an effort to sate his wanderlust.
Rausaro is typically calm under pressure. However, the downside of this is that the otter is frequently detached in his decisions, and as such he has occasionally found himself in dangerous and untenable situations.
As an individual, he holds the concepts of integrity, loyalty and service in high regard and deeply despises creatures that rely on dishonesty and cruelty.
Strengths:
Experienced Scout
Athletic
Literate
Cool-headed
Weaknesses:
Carelessly Reckless
Introverted
Narrow Fighting style
Paralyzing phobia of Deep Waters (specifically, swimming in it)
History:
As a kit, Rausaro was born on the Green Isle. While his clan originated from territory of the River Moss, they were driven out overtime from ancestral fishing grounds at the mouth of the River Moss.
After a particularly destructive conflict, the survivors of the Riverpaw clan were rescued by another clan and taken to the Green Isle, where they were absorbed into the island’s otter population. A smaller clan, they were nevertheless able to maintain a good reputation, and as such a number of them eventually served under High Rhulains as servants and guards. Rausaro’s father was one such guard, and it was during his service that he fell in love with a Streambattle maid. They became mates, and over the course of time Rausaro was born.
Growing up, Rausaro frequently traveled with otter merchants to many of the holts and settlements across the northern coast. There, he was trained by his father and other experienced otters in tracking and combat. He also became enamored of written historical lore, reputedly uncommon for otters. Eventually, his father retired to work on the Green Isle itself, and Rausaro continued to serve under the Rhulain as a scout for the shore parties.
During his 27th year, however, his particular ship, the Moon Dancer, was attacked and boarded by a pair of corsair vessels operating in tandem out of the south. Captured and enslaved for a few months. It was during this time he witnessed some specific brutalities involving oceanic predators, leading to a phobia of deep water. The otter was eventually able to escape, but in the process of securing his gear and weapons he was discovered and nearly overwhelmed, forcing him to abandon his crewmates. Escaping toward the shore, he was horrified to watch the vermin mockingly visibly execute two of his crewmates in retribution and simply ignore him.
While revenge was foremost in the otter’s mind, the bitter reality was that he stood no chance going alone against the crews of the ships Bloodwyte and Tear of Samptera. Though he attempted to trail the ships in hope of an opportunity for revenge, unfamiliar territory and bad weather resulted in the loss of the trace. Bitter and unhappy, he wandered aimlessly north, feeling that he had failed in his duty. It was then that he stumbled across Redwall Abbey.
While he initially planned to stay for a short time and return to the services of the High Rhulain, Rausaro became enamored with the Abbey, finding a deep fascination for the legends of the Abbey and a sense of peace. Initially hesitant to stay at the Abbey, he soon discovered from Long Patrol Hares that otter trading ships hadn’t been seen in months to allegedly increased corsair activity. Effectively stranded, Rausaro decided to stay at the abbey and offer his services to the local skipper while he waited for an opportunity to fulfill his duty.
