Name: Nik Lagdo
Gender: Male
Age: 22
Species: Shrew
Occupation: Logalog of the Guosim
Physical Appearance:
Nik is a short and stocky shrew, even for a species that is already short and stocky. He’s muscular, with the build of a boxing champ. He prefers paw-to-paw combat, and it shows. He has permanently swollen knuckles from training himself and sparring with his boyfriend or other shrews. He’s very standard when it comes to his shrewness. His fur is sandy brown, his eyes are dark brown. Half of his tail got chopped off when he was young, so now he just has a stump there.
He most often wears a simple green vest and tan breeches, and a tattered strip of green cloth as a headband. He should probably replace it soon. Occasionally has strips of cloth around his knuckles for padding, but he forgets to do this a lot, hence why his knuckles are swollen constantly.
Possessions:
Short rapier, slingshot, stones for slingshot, vest, breeches, headband, and a short brown cord around his neck, which holds a little blue stone. The stone has a wide hole in the middle. Ban found this stone and made the necklace. If anything were to happen to this necklace, Mossflower would surely burn. (That was a joke, just to be clear.)
Personality:
Nik is stern, but he likes to be around others. He’s approachable, despite his resting murder face. If you get him to laugh, it feels like an achievement deserving of a medal. It’s not that he doesn’t like to laugh, it’s just he doesn’t have big bursts of laughter like others do. He’s stoic and quiet to those he’s not familiar with. He prefers to err on the side of formality, and he takes after his father, who was known among the warriors as “Stoneface.” Nik doesn’t necessarily want to carry on this legacy, but he can’t really help how he was brought up. His mother is a bit stern, too.
Many shrews just think he’s mad all the time, but they have most likely never seen him actually mad. He’s only become infuriated a pawful of times in his life, and at least two of those times have resulted in some vermin’s death. His general demeanor is simmering, but not always with anger. He feels emotions intensely, just not on the outside. He does have a short temper characteristic of his species, and his loss of temper may often result in a fight with his deputy/boyfriend, his entourage Day and Night, or an unlucky shrew he happened to make eye contact with. These fights can range from verbal to physical depending on the severity of Nik’s anger. He always apologizes afterwards.
Nik enjoys long walks on the river. He appreciates natural beauty, something his father never understood, but his mother greatly encourages. He enjoys watching sunrises, sunsets, snowfall, leaves falling, rain, and all manner of weather that’s safe to be out in. He particularly likes heavy rain early in the morning. He appreciates simplicity and order, and that’s the truth, not just something he says to excuse behavior. He likes when the tribe is content, with everybeast in their place, but he doesn’t think of himself as the one who decides where those places are. He also doesn’t complicate patrols with cool maneuvers or too many orders to follow. He keeps training very simple, focusing on one type of combat per session. He doesn’t like to handle more than one thing at any given time, preferring to save his brain space for real emergencies.
Grown shrews feel a bit awkward around Nik’s sternness, but baby shrews love their chieftain. Little ones giggle at him, want to be held by him, and like to play with him. He’s a very gentle shrew when it comes to the babes, and has often been found napping with a pile of wee shrews atop him, or leading a pretend charge of future warriors against an evil stand of trees.
Nik did succeed his father, but don’t let that fool you. He’s a good shrew for the job of leader. He is vigilant, focused, and unafraid to make tough decisions in battle. His shrews want to follow him, because he always looks after them. He’s very easy to understand when giving orders, and because of his protective nature, he’s the first to jump in the line of fire. His shrews trust him with their lives because he’s proven himself time after time.
When Nik decides he doesn’t like a topic of conversation, he’ll just stop talking, period, and this is a problem because sometimes these topics are actually very important, such as tribal decisions, or the subject of his deputy/boyfriend. Older shrews complain about his lack of maturity in this area, but they can’t complain that Nik is still a very efficient leader.
Strengths:
-Fearless in battle
-Loyal to those he loves
-Protective of his tribe
-Fierce and skilled fighter, especially in paw-to-paw combat
-Enjoyable to be around once he opens up a little
-Quick-thinking in battle situations
-Likes things very simple and in order
Weaknesses:
-Bad at both expressing and understanding emotions
-Very stern
-Acts before thinking
-Will go silent when he decides he doesn’t like a conversation
-He doesn’t explain his feelings well, or at all
-Short temper
-Often fights with others verbally or physically
-One-track mind
History:
Nik grew up as the Logalog’s son, with lots of expectations placed upon him by both others and himself. Of course, his future title was never a guarantee, since tradition held that not family but the one who avenged the previous Logalog got the position. So, Nik regularly got stress headaches when thinking about his future. His father Kyle Lagdo was as stern and stoic as Nik is now, probably even more so, and trained Nik in every kind of combat he knew. Their relationship was always a bit strained, but hardly anyone could tell if the two Lagdo males were actually arguing with each other or just having a conversation. They both yelled a lot. Nik’s mother Yora never bothered to stop them, so no one else really worried about it.
Nik’s tail was cut off on the first patrol he led by himself, and it happened because he was protecting some rookies from a particularly rabid rat bandit. Twin female shrews, Day and Night, had been cornered by the rat, and he’d been able to disarm both of them. Nik came to the rescue, tackling the rat, and in the melee, the rat’s blade dug so deep into Nik’s tail that, while it was still attached, would definitely not stay attached for much longer. Once the vermin had been subdued, the patrol group returned to the main camp, where half of Nik’s tail was amputated. Day and Night started waiting on Nik paw and foot after that, insisting they repay him for saving their lives. Nik doesn’t seem to mind, for the most part, but he does get gruff with them when he feels like they’re in his way.
One fateful day, the Guosim were attacked by a rather large vermin band. The camp suffered heavy losses, their chieftain included. Nik was fighting back to back with his father during the attack, and suddenly Kyle’s body slumped against Nik, who turned in time to see the stoat who’d killed Kyle with his paws still on his blade. Nik, a beast with a short temper already, became infuriated. He saw red, felt the adrenaline rush, the whole bit, and he wasted no time slaughtering the stoat, thus sealing his fate as Logalog. When the attack was over, the tribe mourned their losses and officially gave Nik the title of Logalog.
After this, Nik’s stress headaches went away, and he almost never yelled anymore. His future had been decided, and life was simpler for him. He appointed a close friend, Ban Drift, to be his deputy, because although his stress was eased, he knew he didn’t want to lead alone.
The two of them spent lots of time together on patrols, in counsel meetings, and just in general. Shrews are touchy creatures (literally and figuratively), and friendly intimacy is a common thing in the Guosim. Nik and Ban were often seen holding paws or hugging or sitting close together. Nik didn’t think anything was going on between them, until one pleasant evening on the river when Ban kissed him. Nik responded to this by blinking, turning around, and going back to main camp. When his mother asked what was wrong, Nik explained what had happened, and Yora smacked him for leaving poor Ban alone on the river. Yora had to explain “emotions” to Nik, who finally understood what was happening, and then he raced back to the river, where Ban was still sitting alone. Nik, a shrew of action, kissed Ban back, and that pretty much settled that.
Nik and Ban are completely inseparable now, and some of the older shrews are beginning to complain about Ban’s influence on decision-making now that Nik’s relationship with his deputy has obviously progressed to romantic. Yora has suggested appointing a new deputy, but no official action has been taken. Nik prefers to avoid that topic of conversation.
