Name: Luna Broadblade (also has gone by Broadsword, and holds titles like “…the Crescent Moon,” “…of the Silver Horde”… etc
Gender: Female
Age: 29
Species: Badger
Occupation: Warlord
Physical Appearance:
Luna is an average sized Badger Lady, and if she hadn’t had a rough life would have looked rather average as well. Her fur is the usual black with a white stripe, and fairly healthy where it’s not covering scar tissue. She is shorter than any male Badger, and slighter too. However, after several years worth of fights, she is well muscled, and quick. After so many battles, she is also very scarred, though most of these are along her hands and arms. Her face has three distinct lines across her snout from a fight with a Fox. While slightly faded, she has been known to highlight the marks with war paint. It gives her a rough look, and belies the notion she is peaceful or innocent. When coupled with her trademark grin, it becomes nearly impossible not to see the bloodthirsty nature lurking beneath her surface appearance.
Luna’s preferred colors are blue and silver, as they are the colors of her horde. Her emblem is the crescent moon, which has been emblazoned on the flags and armor of her army. The horde’s general emblem changes depending on who the leader is at the time.
While traveling at the front of the horde, Luna wears plate armor on top of mail on top worn leather. There’s also a lovely blue cape with her chosen emblem to make it clear who the army is following. She also carries a plethora of weapons, including her signature broadsword. When traveling less conspicuously she wears only light armor, a black tunic, and a dark blue, nondescript cloak. Dramatically she once swore she’d die before she put on a dress again. Luna has two gold earrings in her left ear, the only jewelry she wears.
Possessions:
Luna generally wears a cape or cloak, and when on her own she travels light. Luna values her weaponry most of all. She carries a broadsword as her signature weapon. However, no one survives in a horde for twelve years without picking up more than a few tricks. She carries a small blade strapped to her back, one in her boots, and a few throwing knives tucked in her belt. There are no real items of sentiment she carries with her.
Personality:
Luna lives for the thrill of battle. Even as a young child she yearned to fight. Never truly cruel, she might have made a great defender if groomed by a goodbeast. Instead she fell in with vermin, and this has helped to mold her world view. While she loves battle, she does not see honor in it. The purpose is to win, and she will use every tool at her disposal to do so. A cunning tactician, and with a trickster’s streak, Luna likes to outwit her opponents as well as fight them head on. What she truly hates though, is surrendering. On either side. An opponent who puts up no fight is of no interest to Luna, though she will burn a peaceful village to the ground in order to stay in charge of her gang of miscreants. Pragmatic at times, she can be patient and unrelenting. Her moods ten toward the mercurial, and while she can be calm one moment the next might see her out for blood.
Strengths:
Luna is:
-An excellent swordswoman who has won a variety of fights against many skilled opponents. While not as strong as a male badger, she is more than equal to any other beast. She is truly dangerous with that broadsword of hers.
-An excellent tactician, able to think quickly and modify her plans on the fly. Part of this comes from her ability to think creatively in battle, and willingness to try new things.
Weaknesses:
Luna is also:
-Dangerously low on empathy. She can be equally brutal to allies as she is to enemies, and doesn’t seem to care that she is ruining people’s lives by invading the occasional peaceful community. She doesn’t truly believe in loyalty, having seen and survived numerous betrayals, so she doesn’t attempt to court it from her followers.
-Unable to let things go. When she starts a siege, she must see it to completion. If she is beaten back, she cannot bring herself to leave the area and will reengage no matter how bad of an idea it is. There’s tenacity, and then there’s just not knowing when you’re beat. Luna falls into that latter category.
- Not very agile, and her speed is decreasing as her age increases. Scar tissue and broken down cartilage have left her unable to twist and turn like she used to. It is difficult for her to turn quickly, and this means her back is a weak point. Given that she leads a pack of vermin, it is true to say no one has got her back. Only repetitive motions with the sword can be done fast: Basic blocks and strikes. Newer motions that are creative but not practiced are slower and more liable to fail. Wearing plate armor also insures she is slower than most opponents. Much of her style requires her to be in control of her surroundings, and the use of strength and treachery versus speed or agility. The reliance on strength can quickly becomes a problem when she is faced with an equally strong, or stronger, opponent.
History:
Luna was born in Mossflower to a Badger Lady named Juliet. Her father had left before her birth, and she never knew him. Her mother refused to talk about him, though sometimes she would stare off into the distance with a wistful look.
Living near the Abby, Juliet often took Luna with her there to help its occupants. It was in part to try and mold her daughter into a fine young lady. She spoke often of a Badger Lady’s duty to others, how one day she may marry a Badger Lord and have to manage a fortress of her own. That one day she’d be a Badger Mother. It was Juliet’s belief that needlepoint, cleaning, cooking, conversation and musicianship should all be the main pursuits of a true lady.
Luna meanwhile could not care less what a young lady should and shouldn’t know. All she had care for were the stories of warriors past. As a young child she listened wide eyed to tales of Martin the Warrior and the other heroes of Redwall. As she grew older, all she wished to learn was how to wield a sword and bow. Things her mother forbade.
At fourteen, she packed some food in a bag and ran away. Within three days she was caught by a stoat belonging to the Silver Horde. The silver Horde at the time was far North of Mossflower, making its way East on a decades long campaign trail. Leadership was constantly changing, and there was no true destination: Just a group of members raiding easy targets along its path. At the time of Luna’s capture, a fox was the leader by the name Iago of the horde.
So at fourteen, Luna was brought north to where the horde was camped. After much argument in regards to her fate, they decided to make her a slave, and she was once again forced to do the things she hated most: cleaning, cooking, and sewing. With even more beatings if she misbehaved. They took her with them as they traveled northeast, until they came to a fortress ruled by a group of mice. It was then that Luna proposed a plan: She would seek entry into the fortress, and unlock the gate for the horde in exchange for them granting her membership. Iago denied the plan, not trusting his unruly slave. However, Luna persisted with a Lieutenant by the name Philip. She promised him future wealth in exchange for him releasing her bonds and trusting her not to lead them into a trap. Something in her countenance must have convinced him, because he agreed with the plan and unchained her. Granted temporary release, Luna proceeded to do all that she had promised: She opened the gate in the dead of the night, and the horde swept though the sleeping fortress. As a reward, Luna was given freedom and began training as a soldier for Iago. Training amongst vermin was no way to learn graceful tactics, and Luna gained infamy for her vicious style.
Several years passed and Luna progressed through the ranks. She became famous for her honey trap schemes, which often involved her pretending to be an innocent victim. More than one unwitting soul brought into their home an agent of their destruction.
Upon turning twenty-two, Luna felt strong enough in her position to challenge Iago for leadership. He set the time and place, but forbade her from bringing her weapon of choice, the broadsword. Instead he declared it would be hand-to-hand combat, banking on his claws to win the day.
After a brutal battle involving lots of cheating, cursing and the excessively violent use of a rock, Luna stood over the bloody remains of Iago. He had left his mark on her though: Three deep claw marks forever scarred her face, making her infamous honey traps much harder to pull off. At the same time, his death assured her leadership.
Since then Luna has led the Silver Horde on numerous sieges and campaigns. Never one to stay in one place long, she was careful to reward those who showed loyalty to her well. In the case of Phillip, whose help she never forgot, she granted him control of a fort they conquered. It became a signature move of hers, to set up Lords and kings behind her in defeated castles, and collect new members with promises of wealth and power. For each mercenary or potential soldier she has a story promising whatever they want in exchange for their blades. Often, if they survive, she will deliver on them.
However, as Luna has gotten older, she finds her thoughts are often straying back to Mossflower. She thinks, with a bitter taste in her mouth, of her mother’s plans to make her a Lady worthy of Salamandstron’s Badger Lord. She thinks of scrubbing Redwall’s floors and listening to stories of failed conquest after failed conquest. At twenty-nine, Luna knows that she is moving past the prime of her life, andthat the end is almost upon her. It will not be long now till her strength begins to fade. Already she can feel the rewards of a physically hard life creeping up on her. Mossflower is an unconquered prize and a ghost from her past. And so, she has decided to return home.
