Name: Lorne Miskal
Gender:Male
Age: 25
Species: Vole
Occupation: Monk, musician
Physical Appearance:
Lorne is a slightly runty looking vole. Shorter than the average vole, and slightly thinner, his fur is dark brown and his eyes are a pleasing golden color. He dresses in the brown habit of a monk, though he has expressed a desire to start wearing a green one. His habit is often dirty, as he is a bit absent minded and tends to put on clothing that is several days old. His fur is well groomed though, and he can look handsome when he puts a little effort into his appearance.
Possessions:
Lorne’s most precious possession is a reed pipe his father gifted him when he left home. However, he also favors a variety of other instruments including, but not limited to, a lute, a drum, a hardee gurdee, as well as several pipes of varying size and type. He is a skilled player of wind instruments, though he is still learning to play the lute well. Lorne also highly values his books, which are comprised of sheet music and poetry. Being a monk, his worldly possessions are limited.
Personality:
Lorne is a pleasant young vole, who has a deep love of music and other creatures. He enjoys nothing more than playing an instrument and watching people enjoy it. At the same time he is naturally secretive. He tends to be evasive about his personal thoughts, while asking a lot of questions of others. An excellent listener, he has trouble holding up his end of the conversation if it doesn’t involve applying his skills. In truth though, he is a terrible gossip. He loves listening to catty remarks, and makes a number of them too.
Lorne is prone to daydreaming about concerts and music compositions. However, he can be focused when the time calls for it. Often he is warm and giving. He goes about assigned tasks with a steady air, and rarely complains. His contentment with life at Redwall Abbey is readily apparent to anyone who meets him.
Strengths:
Lorne is warm and gregarious, always making time to talk with others. He is also a skilled musician and loves to teach others how to play and sing. Calm by nature, he is an oasis of reason when the world goes mad and rarely gives in to the urge to snap at others when upset. When questioned about it, he says that his only real way of dealing with the harshness of the world is to remain calm and carry on.
Weaknesses:
Lorne is a terrible gossip, and this has gotten him into trouble more than once. He also has the look of someone keeping a secret, even when he’s not actively doing so. Many don’t take him seriously, because he is often day dreaming or talking incessantly about music. There is a certain naiveté to him that experience has yet to rob him of. Lorne also has no fighting ability whatsoever. In truth he can barely form a fist, and hates the idea of physical aggression.
History:
Lorne has had a fairly peaceful life. He grew up on a small farm outside of Mossflower. He had a good relationship with his family before he left, though his closest tie was with his father, Orion. He spent most of his early years following Orion around, though he showed no penchant for farmwork. Instead he would spend much of his time learning to whistle like local birds, tapping out rhythms on the ground, or trying to make up songs to sing. His father was a farmer and provided well for his family, but he knew his son was different from him. But he loved him all the same, and encouraged him to follow his heart. When Lorne heard of Redwall, his heart told him that this was the place for him. So, after many tearful goodbyes, he left home and at sixteen became a novice.
In his eighteenth year he joined a fellow monk on a pilgrimage out into the world to help those who had been made refugees from war or suffered from famine or disease. This mission of mercy lasted five years, during which Lorne continued to share his love of music with the world. It was also during this time Lorne developed his famous calm persona, as it helped him to deal with all that he saw and experienced. Though they were robbed a number of times, his guide refused to learn any form of defense beyond talking things out. Lorne adopted this pacifist approach, seeing it as nobler than using violence to get his way.
Lorne and his companion returned to Redwall Abbey in Lorne’s twenty-fourth year. Since then he has set up concerts for the special events at the Abbey, as well as for festivals. He also offers music lessons for anyone interested. However, he has never forgotten his years on the road and still offers help to anyone in need. Sometimes he contemplates going back on the road, as there is no doubt in his mind there are others in the world suffering and in need of a little help.
