Name: Drumm Thistleback, "Brother Drumm" Gender: Male Age: 38 years old Species: Hedgehog Occupation: Groundskeeper
Physical Appearance: Drumm is a larger than normal hedgehog. In fact, he may be the largest that anyone has cared to remember. He's rotund like the rest of his species, but underneath all the loose skin and fat is hard muscle. His fur is a drab brown with his muzzle being darker with two lines leading up from there to his dark, button eyes. His forehead is a little droopy, but especially so when he's tired or happy. His tiny ears barely stick out from the mass of short quills that extend from the top of his head all the way down his back to his rump. Circled up in a ball, he is a formidable tank covered in spikes. In fact, his signature move is to roll up into a ball and roll down upon his enemies. He is much more acrobatic than he looks, although he's not committing any great feats any time soon.
Possessions: Drumm carries a bird flute strung on a cord around his neck and tucked under his habit. He made it for his daughter, Hollee, and it was all that he found in the aftermath of the attack. He carries the keys to all the areas in the abbey that need keys so he can attend to his duties as Groundskeeper. He also carries a harmonica in the folds of his habit that he will sometimes play when nobody is around. When he is outside of the abbey, he dons a greenish wool cloak and carries with him a quarterstaff made of oak, a roll of canvas for his tent, and a satchel with a pot and kettle, a tinderbox, a bottle of dandelion cordial, and the rest filled with apples.
Personality: Drumm is best described by those who know him as a 'gentle giant'. His massive size and bulk makes him intimidating to all but the dibbuns, who seem to have a knack for seeing through that stuff, but his gentle soul, although broken by the tragedies of his life, softens the bristling edges of his physique. Drumm's past has left him with a bit of a large hole in his heart. His family is all dead, and after never finding his daughter, he assumes she is dead also. Although he has never given up hope that one day she will show up at the Abbey. Because of this Drumm is a bit stoic and standoffish, although he's more just a quiet creature and seeks solace in his work and in the woods and places were others don't often go.
Drumm does not dislike being around others. He just doesn't like talking very much. He prefers to listen or to just be around other beasts. He loves feasts because the amount of food means he doesn't have to talk to anyone and he can still get face time in.
When life at the abbey gets a bit hectic, which sometimes it does depending on what is going on, Drumm will disappear for three-four days on end to go camping in the woods around the abbey, although he always lets someone know where he is going and he always returns, sometimes with plants for the garden or herbs for the infirmary.
Strengths: - his strength - his compassion - wood whittling/carving - he's really good with a staff
Weaknesses: - broken past - introverted - his love of apples - his appetite in general
History: Drumm was born in Mossflower in den within a dense thicket. His mother and father raised him as their only child, and when Drumm met another female hedgehog, he brought her to their family home to share, enlarging the den himself to make more room for her and, eventually their daughter, Hollee.
Having an ever wandering heart, Drumm left for periods of time after his daughter was old enough to help out around the home. One day he came home and found their place had been under attack by a band of vermin. Their thicket had been burned down in order to flush the hedgehogs out and it was at the entrance to the thicket that he found the bodies of his mother, father, and wife. Although he looked everywhere and even inside the hole, he only found the wooden bird flute he had carved for her in the clenched paw of his wife. He assumed that she had been kidnapped, so he spent seasons trying to find her, but to no avail.
One day he was attacked by a group of vermin who had jumped him. He was left unconscious in a ditch on the side of the main road in Mossflower, where a traveling troupe of performers found him and helped nurse him back to health. Not having the heart for revenge, he gave up on trying to track them down and took the suggestion that the troupe gave him to seek out Redwall Abbey and find a new life there.
Drumm hung up his cloak for a habit and was easily accepted into the Abbey. After the groundskeeper retired, he took the other's place, where he continues to be of service as the rest of his prime years slowly fades into his golden ones. He spends many days out in the woods camping where he seeks out solitude. He hopes that one day, his missing daughter will find him at the Abbey or that someone will show up one day that knows of her fate.
