Name: Tirael Gender: Male Age: 22 Species: River otter Occupation: Healer / Infirmary Keeper
Physical Appearance: Tirael's appearance isn't particularly remarkable. He's slightly short for an otter, although he still stands taller than the mice and most of the squirrels in the Abbey. His height deficiency is proportionately offset by his slim figure; although he's not exactly noodly, the otter is nowhere near the point of bulking up. His fur is mostly a rich chocolate brown, with a lighter hue covering his throat and underbelly. Only two of his physical features really stand out. The first is his tail, which is relatively long for someone of his dimensions. The second are his eyes, which are a deep, tranquil blue, complementing his quiet demeanor.
As a Redwaller, Tirael typically wears the forest green habit associated with Abbeydwellers, belted with a silken ivory cord. When he leaves the Abbey, he typically exchanges the habit for a blue tunic with a woven belt and a brown traveling cloak. In colder weather, he often adds a white undershirt and a faded green scarf to the mix.
Possessions: If Tirael is carrying anything, it's most likely to be his canvas satchel. Within the satchel are the various herbs and instruments he uses as a healer; he rarely leaves home without it, and is usually away from home in order to refill his stock in the first place. He also has a reed flute which a mole taught him to carve years ago, and which he likes to play when nobody's looking. His most cherished personal possession is a somewhat battered silver cloak fastener shaped like a songbird with its wings outstretched. It's the only item he has left from his life before coming to Redwall, and at times, it pains him almost as much as he treasures it.
Personality: Whereas most otters tend to be rambunctious and chatty, Tirael is reserved and subdued. He's rather shy around creatures he doesn't know, as he's very anxious at the thought that he'll do or say something wrong. It takes some time for him to grow comfortable with someone, but once he does, his true personality starts to emerge. Although quiet by nature, Tirael isn't antisocial; he develops deep, almost unbreakable bonds to those who are persistent enough to befriend him. Partially because he doesn't have that many friends he considers close, the young otter is intensely loyal, being willing to do anything for someone he loves. It is also only around his friends that his dry, somewhat sarcastic sense of humor comes out.
Being that he's relatively introverted, Tirael spends a great deal of time in pleasant solitude. He's fastidious and dutiful, taking great pride in his infirmary (which is immaculate, thank you very much). He usually spends his leisure time with his snout crammed into the latest book he's taken from the Abbey library. As a result, he not only has a good working knowledge of the healer's arts, but of Mossflower history, as well. When Tirael isn't reading or working, you may catch him playing his flute or even singing something -- just don't let him know you're there, or he'll get embarrassed and stop.
Perhaps Tirael's greatest virtue and flaw simultaneously is his idealism. Whether stemming from the books he's read or from his innately gentle, kind-hearted nature, the healer simply cannot bring himself to believe that anyone is incapable of good. On the one hand, this open-mindedness could allow him to befriend those whom others might reject; of course, it also leaves him vulnerable to deception and manipulation, as he abhors confrontation and can't bear the thought of someone truly having no light in their soul.
Strengths: Tirael is highly intelligent, with a vast trove of knowledge built up over years of incessant reading. He is also devoted to his loved ones, to the point that he may show unexpected bursts of bravery or confidence when the time comes to defend them. He's patient and understanding, and while he may not be the most outgoing otter ever, it's rare for him to make full-on enemies.
Weaknesses: Confidence is something that Tirael is often sorely lacking -- not so much in his abilities as a healer, but in social or tactical contexts. He can be steamrolled by people with more dominant personalities, and as he's very averse to confrontation, he will generally just withdraw and allow his frustration to quietly fester instead of acting on it. His desire to see the best in others may blind him to the reality of their faults, even allowing those with malicious intent to manipulate him for their own ends. As a healer and Abbeydweller, he's also rubbish in a fight.
History: Tirael was born in a small holt in the south of Mossflower. His parents named him Kevv, after his mother's favorite uncle. He lived with his family there for five years, and although he no longer remembers any of it, it was a close family. A week before he turned five, a large band of Juska attacked his home. His mother shoved him and his sister Streamlily into a log, telling them to stay quiet. They waited for hours, and eventually the noise died away. His sister went to find out what happened; she came back, and wouldn't let her brother see. She had brought a small sack filled with the food she had managed to salvage from their home, and holding Kevv's paw, they left.
Without a family, they spent three years alone, wandering north without really knowing where to go. They found help with a few kind woodlanders along the way, though they never stayed anywhere for more than a few weeks. At the end of their strength, they ran smack into a tribe of river rats. With no other recourse, the two siblings ran, hoping to lose their pursuers in the underbrush. Although they were shorter than the rats, it seemed that the two young otters might get away; then a slingstone hit Kevv in the back of the skull. He fell at this point, breaking his left footpaw in the process. His sister didn't realize until too late that her little brother was no longer beside her, and disappeared into the forest. Fortunately for Kevv, the water rats also failed to see him as they rushed past, leaving the tiny otter to be found by squirrels several hours later.
As they didn't have any skilled healers with them, the squirrels brought their discovery to Redwall. It was several days before the young otter awoke, and when he did, he remembered nothing of his past. Even his name was gone; it was as though the slingstone had wiped his memories like a slate. The infirmary keeper, a kindly mouse named Sister Laurel, cared for her young patient as he recovered, doing her best to comfort him as he wrestled with the difficulty of starting life from scratch. The best strategy she had was to tell him stories. It was from his favorite tale, one about an honorable sea otter captain and his fantastical exploits, that she chose his new name: Tirael.
Years passed, and Tirael grew from a child into a young adult. He was devoted to Sister Laurel, declaring himself her apprentice and assisting her until he was 19, when she passed away. Her loss hit Tirael hard; the mouse had been the closest thing he'd had to a parent since he could remember. Nonetheless, he used the knowledge and skills she passed on to him and has stepped into her role as Redwall's infirmary keeper. To this day, he does his work to honor her memory, as well as that of the family he's never known.
Relationships: His parents are dead, with his sister missing; however, he remembers none of them. The only loved ones he has are those he's known since coming to Redwall.
Other: Tirael first appeared on the previous LoRA on November 4, 2008. Man, it's been a long time.
