Name: Athani Treefur
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Species: Squirrel
Occupation: Wandering recorder, chronicling whatever events he happens to run into.
Physical Appearance:
Athani's fur is deep red, gradually turning to a higher shade around his chest. This is a large deviation from the usual shading of the Treefur family: a slightly mottled dark brown coat. His relatives attribute the color variation to his mother's side of the family. He is used to the hardships of traveling in the wild, often without adequate food or shelter, and his body shows it. He is thin, and his fur is not as soft as it could be. There is a scar on his left cheek.
He is often clothed in a dark mottled green tunic, with a hooded cloak of the same color.
Possessions:
Athani's most treasured possessions are his writing materials, which he keeps in a satchel slung over his right shoulder. They are five quill pens of varying sizes, a stack of bark-paper, and three small pots of ink. on the outside his satchel, Athani strapped the sheath for a long knife, purely for self-defense. He also keeps a tough leather sling knotted around his belt, accompanied by a pouch of suitable pebbles. Although he'll often fashion himself a staff to help through rocky terrain, he never kept one for very long, always tossing it away when he came to a forest or grassy flatland.
Personality:
Athani mostly keeps to himself, preferring to question rather than be questioned. He stays on topic, and his manner is often business-like; very rarely does he act in a joking manner, though he does enjoy the humor of others. During a conversation, he'll let the others talk for a while, studying their personalities and opinions. He always speaks in a calm, even voice, leading many to think that he does not feel strongly about anything. However, Athani can feel very strongly about certain things, but goes to great lengths to hide how he reacts; others might take advantage of his feelings. He takes a great (but secret) pleasure in poetry, and will often repeat poems he has memorized as he travels to keep them fresh in his mind. He doesn't like to perform in front of large crowds, but under the right circumstances, might recite a poem or two for a small gathering. He never stays in one place for long, and so always tries not to make any lasting friendships that would cause him to stay.
Strengths:
Slinging and archery--The only reason why Athani doesn't regularly carry a bow with him is because it gives too much of a warlike appearance. He always prefers the bow over the sling, although he's a crack shot with either one. He seeks to avoid conflict, but will fight with the best of them if he must.
Educated--As a wandering recorder, Athani both had to learn much before he left and continues to learn even more on his travels. He writes in a large, flowing script, and knows by heart much of the history of Mossflower, Redwall, Salamandastron, and the surrounding lands.
Speedy--Like all squirrels, Athani knows just how to pile on speed. He tries to stay out of situations where he needs to run, but often finds himself running all the same.
Weaknesses:
Melee combat--Athani's instincts lead to self-preservation; and the easiest way to do that is make sure that you're a good distance away from the enemy. He never studied any kind of melee combat, and so is at a severe disadvantage should he find an enemy a paw's length away from his nose.
Aloofness--Athani finds it difficult to make friends, partly because he is so reluctant to talk about himself. He does not recognize the drawbacks of this, but those who would like to know him better are irritated by his refusal to be more friendly.
History:
Athani was born in a tribe of squirrels in Mossflower, the second son of Jogalu Treefur and Farany Firetail. The Treefur family was highly respected in this tribe, and Athani was given the best schooling available, even being sent to Redwall Abbey for a season. His older brother, Darlo, became a hot-headed warrior, so Athani's parents trained him to keep his cool to even the family out. Athani has a great deal of respect for the physical abilities of his brother, though he often tries to prevent Darlo from making rash decisions. One time, Darlo wanted to lead a band of the tribe's warriors to subdue a clan of Flitchaye who were getting too close for comfort. Athani argued with his brother, taking the stance that if the squirrels offered a paw of friendship to the Flitchaye, the smelly rodents would respond in like manner. Darlo, however, would not be convinced, and the argument escalated. Eventually, Darlo turned to storm out of the room, and Athani (in an unusual show of force) grabbed at him. Darlo spun and scratched his brother, thus creating the scar on Athani's cheek. The mission was a success, and the Flitchaye quickly left the squirrels' territory. Darlo regretted his mad attack on his own brother, however, and asked Athani to forgive him. Athani did, but not wanting to disrupt the tribe any more, he decided to travel.
The first place he went to was the only other familiar one: Redwall Abbey. There, he spent much time in studying the ancient scrolls in the gatehouse, and talking with the recorder there, Brother Jerome. Abbot Ignatius offered Athani to stay in Redwall, but Athani declined, asking only that he be supplied with writing materials to record the stories of everyone he met in his travels. The Abbot and the Brother Recorder both agreed, and the cook furnished him with plenty of delicious Redwall food.
Athani traveled the lands for a few years, keeping a regular journal, and naming the years as he saw fit, in the manner of recorders of Redwall. His travels took him north and east, primarily, and he encountered many creatures, all with fascinating stories that he eagerly recorded. If he left any weeping squirrelmaids behind him, he never knew.
After a while, Athani returned to Redwall, only to find that the Abbot and Brother Recorder had both died. He stayed only long enough to record whatever the creatures there remembered about them, donated his writings to the new Recorder, and refill his ink pots. After that, he continued traveling, this time west, toward the sea...
