Name: Franz Grubach Gender: Male Age: 38 Species: Weasel Occupation: Pirate, first mate; former “lieutenant of the lower decks”
Physical Appearance: The first thing you notice when you see Franz is an ear to ear grin of perfect, likely red stained teeth. He always has a smile and it gets especially large when he's working. He's also missing his left eye, marked by a single deep vertical slash scar. On land, you can see the emptiness of the socket. It's a badge of honor to him… though this new Captain makes him wear a patch when on deck. His fur, a dark brown is mostly intact, though patches are missing and scars from burns and sword slashes are readily visible on his upper torso. His white chest fur carries a slight pink hue, stained from blood (the new Captain made him clean up when he was promoted). He wears black trousers, a belt holding his three main weapons, boots, a red bandana made from a stolen bonnet, and two steel unchained shackles. His upper body is typically clothed only in his over the shoulder leather scabbards when on raids.
Possessions: Other than the standard minimal essentials he keeps in his quarters, he has two cutlasses, Hansel and Gretel, steel shackles he wears using them as vambraces, and a rusty, but still sharp butcher knife he calls Tod.
Personality: To call Franz sadistic is an understatement, to call him psychotic would be flattery. Outwardly, he's unstable; always constantly moving even when he's addressing the captain, chattering and laughing even when alone, often found naming inanimate objects that are able to cause harm (The ocean’s name to him is the Glorious Kefka).
Internally, everything is calm. All makes sense. He's very intelligent, calculating. He knows what he wants and he's always heading towards that objective, even if outwardly he seems chaotic. He has only one real interest; drawing blood, and gaining power, but not necessarily noteriety. That draws attention. No. He maintains his growing degree of control without anyone ever seeing him hold the strings. He loves his reputation as the faceless enforcer and even in his new role, does all he can to maintain it.
It's not known whether past captains were aware or not, but the missing digits of some crew members and cargo, were sampled by Franz when they were sent to him for punishment. He finds mouse especially delicious, badger too tough, and birds too bland.
Strengths: A swords beast's rapier took his left eye, but it also left him with his two signature strengths. He feels no pain, a truth attested to by the numerous scars on his arms, hands, and torso. With no pain, he leads landing and raiding parties with an aire of calm assurance and certainty. Paired with his scarred appearance, coming face to face with him is enough to terrify any creature to their core. Save the crew, no creatures alive have ever seen his face.
Weaknesses:
He is determined to keep his end of the bargain which means he will guard the captain with his life, regardless of risk. He is easily distracted and often goes for the easy kill over a more dangerous opponent. As he cannot remain still, he doesn't have the most agile footing even with clear orientation.
History: Not much is known of Franz's past. Even for as long as he can remember he's been sailing with one pirate crew or another. Crew exchanges here, boarding raids there, the occasional arriving into port sans the rest of the crew. That's how he, at 27 met the last Captain. The man was small time, but seemed to feel the size of the ship would suit his business and was the only one to meet Franz. Their arrangement was simple. He would gladly serve the captain, maintaining the cargo and ensuring no mutinous activity went unpunished. In exchange, he was too join in raids and given rations on par with the captain. Both things the last Captain was absolutely against.
He agreed and for the past decade they lead their crew from a single ship to a versatile fleet of profitable and terrifying vessels. As with most stories like this though, the captain began forgetting his deal. Oh the rations didn't stop. In fact they got better. Raiding? No. Franz was a part of every landing party and gaining quite the reputation.
He was called in less and less frequently to punish misbehaving crewmen and out of line captives. In fact, the captain kept one of the last captives on the upper deck! So when it seemed clear to him that this captive would commit mutiny, he considered it the result of a broken contract and remained in his room below decks.
Needless to say, he was surprised to hear a knock at his door later, even more so that it was a little hedgehog dressed as the new captain. She was certainly straightforward when addressing him and showed no fear what so as they discussed his role on the ship and the way she would now be running it. The few points he objected, he was shut down quickly, but given fair concessions.
She earned his respect that day better than any other captain that he worked with.
The toughest request she made was his appearance. The fact was she wanted him above decks out front doing his job, but now to be seen… at least to her family of crewmen. For this, she insisted he cover his empty socket with an eye patch and wash the tears of dried blood off of himself. In return, the original agreement would hold, but also with the authority of the first mate.
With a sharp cackle and a wide grin, Franz agreed and some time later, the hedgehog stood on deck and called for her new first mate who wriggled his way on deck to the immense horror of all the crew.
The lieutenant of the lower deck, greeted them with a grin!
Relationships: None known at this time. He is strictly loyal to himself, though the captain has his respect.
