It wasn't often these days that Bardineta found herself with enough free time to leave the Abbey, much less the grounds, and yet here she was, ambling slowly down the path through the Mossflower Woods with her sharp eyes darting alertly from one side to the other. It had been far too long since she had left the safety of the Abbey, and she knew full well that her reflexes would have dulled and softened with age. Now, she felt that every moving shadow was an unknown assailant, and every twitching leaf was just waiting for the opportunity to jump out at her.
It was ridiculous.
She had lived on the road when she was scarcely a year old! She had wandered around dark forests in the middle of the night! She had seen her parents die before her eyes! And here she was, Abbess of Redwall and scared of her own shadow! Bardineta was not impressed with herself in the slightest.
