“We could take one of the trails that go through the North, an’ see your kin while we’re seein’ mine…”
Jan only nodded. Boy, he hadn't realized how difficult the thought of blood-related family was. It was fine. He had family here. Sort of? He has Sister Lyla. He had his new friend Kay. Maybe he ought to really think about making more friends. But how? Wander around at night until more beasts showed up? Most sensible creatures were asleep when he wasn't. His peers thought his repeating habit was weird. Girls his age just liked to tease him or be way too cute to approach.
He was making a lot of excuses. He should just focus on Kay for now. It was fine. It was all fine.
“Hey Jan... where are your parents?”
Oh. Okay. Still on that road. Well. What's a good answer? The truth, probably. Kids didn't like to be lied to. He knew that one from experience. She'd experienced death before. He folded his arms and leaned them against the table, took a deep breath.
"Mum's laid to rest in the grounds," he said. "I never really got to meet her. An' my dad..."
How did he speak about the mouse who'd traumatized his mother? He'd gotten that story from Sister Lyla, and his surrogate mother Orchid. He knew his father was partly the reason his mother was dead. No mouse should be having little ones at the age she'd been. So what could he say?
"I never met my dad, either," he said, eyes fixed on his empty cider cup. "My mum ran away from him 'fore I was born. That's why I think he's up North. Can't be sure." He shrugged, balancing the cup on its edge with one finger on its rim. This shouldn't bother him. He didn't want it to bother him.
He let out a short breath, and then he smiled at Kay. He should show her that it had been okay for her to ask this question. Because, really, it was. He didn't need to keep secrets. They didn't have to be secrets, anyway. "It's alright, though. I've got this place."
