"Why don't you join us? If Lady Winifred does not object, of course."
Privately, Athani didn't mind the hare's bumbling request. He recognized his own must have sounded just as bad as soon as he made it. With a hungry look, he turned to the hedgehog indicated by the hare.
"Welcome Mr. Treefur! The more the merrier!"
"Thank you, miss. It's very kind of you." And it was, really. First, he had just been interested in the idea of company, but the idea of food was becoming quickly more and more pleasing.
"My name is Lady Winifred, and that's Jones and that's Blackear."
Athani nodded politely to the squirrel and the fox. "A pleasure!"
"Would you like some tea as well? It's freshly made, and I think we may have a spare cup."
"That would be delightful, Lady Winifred!" Athani said with more enthusiasm then he meant. "I mean... well, it gets so exhausting, footing it across the wilderness." He watched with great anticipation as she poured some more tea. It smelled extraordinary. No, he was not going to regret his rude self-invitation. These creatures had made him feel perfectly welcome.
"So, what brings you to our fire Mr. Treefur?"
"Oh, well," Athani shrugged as he took the cup with a grateful glance toward Lady Winifred and helped himself to a biscuit. "I'm a traveler. I gather stories, write them down, then take them back to Redwall where they can be stored for anyone to read as they please. It's a bit of a lonely life, but I don't mind being alone. I was feeling in the mood for company tonight, so I'm very glad I saw your fire!" He took a sip of the tea, and was delighted by the surprise. This tea tasted better than it smelled! He'd never had tea like that before. As he took a bite of the biscuit, a warm, cozy feeling started to spread through his whole body, and he suddenly realized how tired he was. But no; it would be even ruder to fall asleep, after inviting himself in!
